Kirby Lonsdale in the Lake District

Kirkby Lonsdale is an ancient settlement lying in the heart of the Lune Valley on the Cumbria, Lancashire and Yorkshire county boundaries. Romans, Saxons, Normans and Danes all carved an impression on the town which was included in the Doomesday Bookof 1086 as Cherchebi, meaning village with a church.

It has a 13th century charter for fairs, a school dating from the reign of Elizabeth 1st and enough 17th and 18th century pubs to distract you from history altogether.

With it's centre of old grey stone houses, it's Thursday market, it's many delightful speciality shops and restaurants, modern Kirkby Lonsdale has an unfailing charm.

The fine river and fell views inspired some of Turner's paintings and Ruskin described the scenery as some of the loveliest in Europe.

There is plenty to do, for the town is well known for it's community activities. Sporting clubs, including golf, bowls and tennis welcome visitors and there is fishing on the River Lune. Regular musical events are held throughout the summer in the church. An annual highlight is the Victorian Fair, when the whole town travels back 150 years in time.

A leisurly stroll may include the beautiful Norman church of St Mary, the panoramic Ruskin's View and the legendary Devil's Bridge, now a scheduled ancient monument. More attractive walks, scenery and delightful villages like Casterton, Barbon, Sedbergh and Dent are nearby. In the vicinity you will find Sellet Hall Herb Gardens, Leighton Moss Bird Reserve, the Settle to Carlisle railwat line and historic Sizergh Castle, Levens Hall and Leighton Hall.
